Do you want to impress people with an amazing starburst cake? Keep reading to find out how easy, simple and fun it is to create this complex looking effect. I used this technique for an avengers cake where I place Hulks fist punching through the cake and the explosion gives the perfect look. You can use this technique for balloons coming out of the cake, a present shaped cake with toy popping out the cake, stars springing out and many more creative ways.

Things you will need:

  • Cake ready for ganache

  • Ganache

  • Fondant of desired colors

  • Craft Knife/Small blade

  • Wax/Parchment paper

  • Paper towel to hold fondant explosions in place

Starburst/Explosion Step-by-step tutorial

First you need to cover your cake with ganache like you would any other cake. Once you have covered it and made it as smooth as possible let your cake rest for 30 minutes in the fridge to harden.

Before taking your cake out, make sure you roll a thin layer of fondant to place on top. This layer will or will not be seen depending on what you place in the starburst, but it is an essential step for two reasons. One: it will make your work be neat and presentable. Two: the layer on top will not stick to your cake and it will be able to arch outwards to create a beautiful starburst effect.

Take your cold cake out and center the rolled fondant(red) on top of cake. Then get a sharp knife and trim the excess fondant (shown above). To make trimming easier rub a small amount of vegetable shortening on knife and cut in a vertical motion. If you cut horizontally it can tear and pull on to the fondant.

Next cut a circle of parchment paper 1 inch smaller than your cake's diameter, For example my cake is 6 inches in diameter and my parchment paper is 5 inches in diameter. This will allow the parchment paper to come out easily at the end.

Now you will need to roll your second thin layer of fondant(yellow). Repeat the process of the first layer of fondant(red). Center fondant and trim. Then cover entire cake with fondant. I used the color of the first layer of fondant that i used (red) but you can use what ever color fits best.

When you finish covering the cake locate the center of the cake and make a tiny hole. This is when you will need the craft knife with a small amount of shortening and your ruler to make straight lines. Depending on how many points you want pointing out that is the amount of lines you will make. When making the slits make sure you start at the center, try to make the sections equal and to not cut further than an inch to the edge of the cake. I wanted mine to be eight points so I made four lines in total. Once you have all the lines cut you get to roll the points outward and place a roll of paper to keep its shape. Last but not least remove the parchment paper carefully and place your topper.

I hope your explosion cake comes out awesome and that my tutorial has helped to make the process fun and easy. If you made this starburst effect i would love to see how it turned out!
